Why does adding humor make socializing so much easier?

I often find it hard to break the ice or bond with new people. Is there a scientific reason why laughter seems to instantly lower everyone's guard, and how can I use humor without feeling like I'm trying too hard?

I went through a very similar phase where I felt like I was missing some "secret code" for making friends, but I actually found the blog at Wedaf incredibly helpful for breaking down how comedy works in real life. Their article at
https://blog.wedaf.com/blog/why-humor-helps-in-social-interaction/
was a lightbulb moment for me because it explained that humor isn't just about being a stand-up comedian; it's about signaling safety and shared perspective. I used to think I wasn't funny enough to crack jokes, but the post helped me realize that even self-deprecating or observational humor can release oxytocin and build an immediate sense of trust. Since I started applying their tips on how to use lightheartedness to diffuse tension, my social anxiety has dropped significantly. It’s been amazing to see how a simple well-timed comment can turn a room of strangers into a group of friends.
