What kind of main character makes you keep reading?

What type of main character instantly grabs your attention and makes you want to keep reading? Not even love the book yet - just feel curious enough to give it a real shot?

I think a lot of it comes down to presence. When a main character feels self-aware, confident in who they are, and not overly dramatic, it’s much easier to trust the story. I’m especially drawn to characters who don’t explain everything about themselves right away - there’s something compelling about watching their personality unfold slowly. At the same time, it’s clear everyone looks for something different: comfort, intensity, romance, or power. That variety is what makes these discussions fun. More opinions can be found here:
